Google has announced a $1.65 billion stock deal to buy hot young video-sharing website YouTube. “The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google’s mission to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said in a statement. Bloggers upset over clampdown

Mumbai: The internet has once again proved to be the government’s Achilles’ heel. Immediately after the 7/11, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) issued a fiat to 150 odd internet service providers (ISPs) to clamp down on a handful of sites, including a few popular blogs. The move has attracted severe flak from the blogging community, which has now gone into a funk. Most of them reckon the clampdown amounts to repression of free speech and that the government has overstepped its bounds. A DoT official admitted they had asked the ISPs to block a few sites. Though he did not name the sites, he cited intelligence reports that confirmed how members of the banned organisations were using certain blogs to transmit messages to members. And unlike e-mails that can be tracked, blogs cannot be tracked as easily. Which is why, a clampdown was essential. The DoT letter has asked the ISPs to block sites like hindunity.org and exposingtheleft . blogspot . com , though it did not state the

Google,Apple join MS in antitrust battle

For Microsoft, the world’s biggest software company, run-ins with antitrust regulators have become de rigueur. This week, European Union officials concluded that the firm had failed to comply with penalties imposed in 2004 for anticompetitive behaviour; a large fine is looming. On July 4, Microsoft also suffered a legal setback in South Korea, where it is embroiled in another battle with regulators. But Microsoft is not alone. Two of its rivals—Google and Apple— each seen as the anti-Microsoft in their own markets are running into modest antitrust problems, too. On June 29, Google introduced an online-payment service called Checkout, which is intended to compete with the PayPal service owned by eBay. It is a digital wallet that simplifies how people pay for things over the Internet. To entice merchants to adopt the system, Google discounts the fee when they also buy advertisements sold through its hugely successful AdWords system. That has raised some eyebrows, because

Science in a TAILSPIN

Can Bangalore hold on to the tag of Science City? It could, but the city is under pressure to do so for two reasons. Firstly, the emergence of Information Technology is threatening to overshadow its Science City status. Secondly, Pune and Hyderabad are emerging as premier science hubs in central and southern India. In the last 10 years, IT has grown institutionally in the form of private companies and research labs and is the premier export product of the state at 37%. Science has remained the same with no increase in the number of research institutions. The present number is, however, relatively high compared to other cities. “IT in Bangalore is drawing young science researchers and even faculty away from the sciences, not due to innovative research possibilities in IT, but due to an exponential monetary component, a five-fold return over what science can offer,” says Jayant Haritsa, asst professor, Indian Institute of Science. Bangalore is also facing stiff competition from centres o

The Last Supper

Image
This is the strange history of one of the largest and most beautiful paintings in the world. Believe it or not, a door was cut through it, bullets fired through it, and stones thrown. It was over painted several times and a bomb nearly destroyed it! Though ravaged by time, its exquisite life-likeness survives to this day. Of course, it is none other than the ‘Last Supper’ by Leonardo da Vinci, possibly the greatest genius the world has ever known, and one of the best artists ever. The 15 x 29 ft picture was painted on the refectory of a Dominican monastery in Milan, known as the covenant of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Leonardo started the painting in 1495 under a contract, and completed it in 1498 – a very long time for a painting. This was because of the peculiar way in which he painted. We have an eye-witness account. It is reported that Leonardo would paint for about four days without a break and without food and water. Then he would stop and study his work critically for many days, s
